First lesson, Slimmed Down Spelling. K's mother was pleased that so many teachers had seen the recording of the foundation lesson last week. The present lesson starts from the beginning of this piece of independet writing that K wrote last week. The pic becomes clearer if you click on it.
K was spelling words exactly as they seemed to her to sound, with just one letter for each sound.
I explain why this doesn't always work, and introduce the idea that letters sometimes work in groups, and that some words need an extra letter, both of which we only use when we've learned the word needs them. Finally, for historical reasons, the letter we need is sometimes not the one we'd think, as in was, water, warm.
The video starts with the first sentence in K's writing, It wus getin lat at nit. I explain what she needs to add to the letters she's used, and what adjustments she needs to make to her thinking. We never copy. K works hard and succeeds in writing the sentence independently by the end, and I introduce the group tion. We will have a second session next week.
