Professor Katharine Perera died on 16th October last year, at the age of 72. I have just heard this news. Katharine's thesis, on the development of phrasing in children's reading, is a brilliant and original piece of research that traces intonation and phrasing in the early stages of learning to read, and establishes clearly the link between quick and accurate word identification and reconstructing meaning from the words on the page. The thesis, The Development of Prosodic Features in Children's oral reading, is downloadable here. I strongly recommend it to anyone with a professional interest in children's reading.
