Joe Dale, Links into Languages, Southampton Univeristy and Hampshire LA's Jo Rhys-Jones had a triumph last weekend wth this superb conference, which brought together ICT users from all over the UK and Ireland, and participants from as far away as Singapore. Joe has a blog entry here. Highlightes included Leslie Welsh's excellent selection of internet sites teenagers like, Dale Hardy's use of Esperanto as a starting point for gifted and talented linguists, and "show and tell" in the bar on Saturday night, which featured a hilarious song from John Connor, a ski-ing lesson from Jo Rhys-Jones, and interesting 10 minute presentations from around a dozen people.
This conference cost £75 for one day and £100 for two days. It was full, with 130 people, many of whom, like myself, had attended Joe Dale's earlier conferences on the Isle of Wight. Its main attraction for me was that everyone was interested in children and young people learning languages, and none of the speakers had a political slant. Fair to say that HMG was not exactly popular among the delegates, however, mostly over cuts to libraries.
The powerpoint from my contribution to the show and tell, "Introducing writing, no fears, no tears" is Download Introducing Writing - no fears, no tears.. An explanatory note is here.
